Horse Safaris in North India

We offer a unique opportunity to enjoy the real India, away from the mass tourist circuit. Visit the state in India that has everything but the sea. Enchanting lakes and gardens, majestic forts and palaces, shimmering sands of the desert, the eternally enduring Aravellis mountains and is known as the "Land of the Princes".

Routes are selected to provide a wide range of riding conditions; to visit places of special interest (i.e. Jain Temples of Ranakpur, Kumblegarh "Cloud Palace" and "Great Wall"); see remote villages and their tribal groups; enjoy festivals, fairs and the beautiful wildlife of Rajasthan.

Riders may find themselves in jungle scrub, in soft sand, in a lush green valley or on a steep hillside all within the space of a few days. Guests may live in fully equipped camps; hotels; castles, forts or personal Rawls (home) of the Rajputs (warrior caste and village owners) depending on the route.

All routes are in Rajasthan. The exotic and colourful local traditions are seen in the forms of: the dress and jewellery of the ladies or the turbans of the men; the food specialties at each evening's end; every night when guests are in the camps entertainment around the campfire with a local cultural (music, dance, etc.) presentation will be provided. In everyway, the guests will enjoy the famous hospitality of Rajasthan and the Indian people.

Rajasthan abounds in wildlife. Depending upon the route taken and the season, one may expect to see many wild animals including antelope, panther, bear, camels, crocodiles, eagles, vultures, green parrots, peacocks and other exotic birds. Blue bull, samber and wild boar may also be seen, though these animals are now rare and mostly confined to wildlife reserves.

Rider on the long safaris should be reasonably experienced and prepared for four to seven hours in the saddle each day. Safari groups must consist of between eight and tewenty riders along with the guides. We will make every efforts to fit individuals, couples and smaller parties together , to make up this quota. Ordinarily, safaris include sight seeing, riding and one day of rest depending on the track and riding days. It is necessary to have a minimum of half day before the start of the safari to train riders on our horses, make appropriate horse selection for each rider and for riders and selected horses to get acquainted.

The Horses: Most of the horses used on safaris are Marwari, a pure Indian breed of horse, instantly recognisable by their distinctive curly ears, stamina and their faithfulness and loyalty to their master. Others are Katiawari or Sinde. Using all these breeds allows for temperament of horse to meet the requirements of each rider.

Some Marwari horses will trot and canter, but others will naturally break into a different gait, called in Hindi rawal. In English, it is known as a kind of amble, a place or a rack. This gait, originally evolved in desert conditions and gives extremely smooth ride. It also offers additional challenges to European riders.

A groom is provided for all the horses, but riders are expected to take the same care and show the same interest in their horses' welfare as they would feel if they were their own.
