The history of the shrine dates back to 17th century and it was exclusively constructed by Muslim Auqaf Trust with the objective of preserving the Prophet's hair, when it arrived in Kashmir in 1699. The name Baisakhi is taken from the first month of the Vikram calendar.. Baisakhi is also known as the harvest festival. Devotees who consistently take a dip every year throng Rivers, canals and ponds.
For the Sikhs of Jammu, Baisakhi is the day their tenth Guru Gobind Singhji formed the Khalsa sect in 1699. Several fairs are planned and people come in hoards to celebrate the beginning of the New Year and watch the famous Bhangra dance of Punjab.
Lohri This festival is also known as Makar Sankranti. It hails the onset of spring. Thousands take a dip in the holy rivers. In the rural areas, custom requires boys to go around asking for gifts from newly-weds and new parents.
A special dance is held on the occasion of Lohri. Boys move on the street in a dancing procession. The whole atmosphere comes alive with the pulsating drumbeats.
