The Bharatpur or Keoladeo
Ghana Bird Sanctuary of Rajasthan boasts of a high
density of vegetation. No wonder, the term “Ghana”
(thick vegetation) is constantly used in reference
to Bharatpur.
Bharatpur vegetation is mainly of the dry deciduous
type that is accompanied by arid grasslands and
other such forms. In fact, the vegetation of Bharatpur
can be divided into 181 genera and 227 sub species.
The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is also covered by
artificially managed marshes that are inhabited
by many varieties of water birds.
The forests of Bharatpur are mainly covered by trees
like Kadam, Babul and other fruit bearing trees
like Jamun. Meanwhile, the scrublands of Bharatpur
are mainly dominated by Ber and Kair plants. Khus
grass is also found in many areas of Bharatpur.
With 11 sq km of Bharatpur’s total area covered
by marshlands, due mention needs to be made of the
aquatic vegetation in the park. Some of the aquatic
varieties include water lilies, duckweeds, sedges
and reedmace.
The flora of Bharatpur is indeed diverse and is
sure to fascinate any nature lover. No wonder, the
park is visited by thousands every year. Nature
walks, treks and rickshaw rides around the park
are a great way to get oneself acquainted with the
rich flora and fauna of the Bharatpur or Keoladeo
